Papers collecting tornado-lost items

Each week, the paper will run photographs of the items delivered, she said.

"We'll do this as long as it takes. This may be all someone ends up with," she said of the retrieved possessions.

Nelson Snider, 80, of Gassville recovered a photograph of his parents' 50 th wedding anniversary. The picture was lost when the twister destroyed his house. It was one of only a few photographs he had of his parents.

Someone found the photograph and gave it to The Baxter Bulletin, a Mountain Home newspaper. Snider saw his picture in the paper and retrieved it.

"I don't know who turned it in," he said. "I wish I did so I could thank them.” Tom Larimer, the director of the Arkansas Press Association, of which scores of Arkansas newspapers are members, said he hopes other papers help with the lost-and-found recovery.

Hudgens beats Howard to online glory

Forget climate change and politics — the three most important things on the minds of Australians are Facebook, YouTube and Summer Heights High.

And users of Google Australia care more for Disney-star-turned-nude photo-luminary Vanessa Hudgens than they do about their outgoing prime minister.

The internet search giant today released its end-of-year list of the most searched-for terms, revealing among other things that New South Wales cares most about charities, Victoria about beaches and Western Australia about cheap hotels.

the has-been

The rest of our daydreams are more prosaic—like matching budget authority and outlays, or revising the definition of poverty, now hopelessly out of date. When we're feeling especially frisky, wonks close our eyes and imagine the Alternative Minimum Tax being fixed.

President Bush has no use for wonks, and hacks have grabbed the headlines in most Bush scandals. But the sheer volume of scandal in the Bush administration has made it possible for even a few eggheads to get a piece of the action. Paul Wolfowitz used to be a classic Washington academic—dean of a public-policy school and charter member of a neoconservative think tank. But at the World Bank, he has pulled off the rarest of feats—a wonk sex scandal, which is just as you'd expect: a dull morass of committee meetings, personnel classifications, and contracts.

CALDWELL'S WWE RAW REPORT 12/10: Ongoing virtual time coverage of 15 ...

Lawler asked. [Commercial Break] [Q5] Tomorrow night on ECW, Batista makes a guest appearance to face Elijah Burke again. Lilian Garcia then introduced the original four members of Evolution. Ric Flair's music hit first and Flair came out dressed to wrestle. Triple H's music hit and he came out second. Hunter and Flair hugged before Hunter did his water spitting from the apron. Batista came out next with the World Title belt around his waist. He quickly embraced Flair before hugging Hunter. Batista posed, then Randy Orton's music hit to a round of boos. Lawler asked if this is really going to happen. Orton stopped on the stage with a mic in hand and the WWE Title over his shoulder. Orton said he's not joining them. He said he is the WWE champion and he is a the pinnacle of his career. Orton said the only reason why they want him out there is to ride the coattails of his current success.

Fans add to atmosphere, excitement of high school basketball ...

Littlefield enjoys catching up with alumni he hasn't seen in a while, as well as fans from around the state who have latched on to the Cavaliers.

"They come from all over, it seems like," Littlefield said. "You see a lot of the same faces, year after year."

Catching up with old friends isn't exclusive to the teams involved.

"I've gotten to meet a whole lot of new people (going to the tournament)," Coffin, who plans on attending games in Augusta and Bangor, said. "The reason I don't go to Florida is basketball."

People who attend games as fans of basketball rather than of specific teams can witness upsets. Last season, No. 8 Hampden beat No. 1 Edward Little in Eastern A, while No. 8 Maine Central Institute knocked off No. 1 Maranacook in Eastern B.

"I love it when some team comes out of the blue and whips a higher team.

Pete Doherty's Free love

Pete Doherty's new girlfriend is a "clean-living" teenage model.

The troubled Babyshambles rocker - whose turbulent relationship with model Kate Moss ended last year - has reportedly been dating 19-year-old beauty Portia Freeman since last December after she watched him perform in London and went back to his Wiltshire home.

Pete's friend said: "Portia is probably the best thing to happen to Pete. She is a very clean-living girl and not at all into drugs."

'American Idol' Recap: Carly Smithson Sings Her 'Heart' Out, Simon ...

Still, it was a weird presentation. It always amuses me when these clueless chicks sing sepia-toned lyrics with big old oblivious grins on their faces. What, did Katharine McPhee open a vocal school? Brooke was more Phoebe Buffay at Central Perk than Carly Simon at Martha's Vineyard. But Simon said he "loved it," and her safety is almost assured. I'm glad. Me like crazy.

Ramiele Mulubay
Song: Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way"
Verdict: When will she satisfy the need in me?

Was anyone taken aback by Ramiele's lackluster recital of this song? Not 10 seconds before she started, she said, "You might see me dancing onstage if I do a fast song. Maybe!" She said "maybe," exclamation point. If she had told us she was going to position herself onstage like a stagnant albeit beautiful piece of pottery while performing one of the most popular disco classics ever, I would've told her to stick to ballads and be proud of the nickname "Ramiele Lullaby." Vocally, she started the song nicely, but immediately fell into an awfulness reminiscent of Jasmine Trias (one of Mulubay's idols).

1800 extra soldiers, but not one good reason

We might agree, though, that in a conflict claiming civilian lives, and in which young people are expected to risk death on the taxpayers' behalf, all concerned are entitled to a few facts. Britain, of all the old imperial countries, understands what wars in Afghanistan can mean. I could tell you, meanwhile, what I believe the "special relationship" between this country and the US has become - colonialism reversed; a historical first - but the time for honesty is past due, surely.

What are we doing? Why are we doing it? Or, more to the point, why can't they, or won't they, answer those questions in plain language?

I suspect Afghanistan is already a debacle. Oxfam and Germany's Defence Minister do not appear to differ from that opinion. But still, 1800 trained and (if you believe it) eager individuals from a very small country are about to be sent halfway around the world to kill and be killed for purposes about which we can still, in honesty, only speculate.

Christian acts headed to Tri-State

Newsboys, Casting Crowns and several other Christian bands are set to play the Tri-State in coming months.

Among the best-known acts coming to town are the Newsboys, a group that was formed in Australia in the 1980s. Since then the group, with some lineup changes, has sold more than six million albums. Now based in Tennessee, the group has five gold albums, several Dove Awards and more than 20 No. 1 radio singles to its name.

Holy mole, Angela's serves real Mexican

Take Angela's Cafe. If you don't know your way around East Boston, it's quite a bit harder to find. But once you home in, you won't forget how to get there. Angela's is memorable.

As with most memorable restaurants, that has a lot to do with the people who work there. It's a family business. Luis Garcia, son of the chef, makes the rounds in the tiny, goldenrod-colored room. He is chatty and welcoming, full of information about the restaurant's food, the status of its wine and beer license (hopefully in a few months, he says), and its history. Before his family opened the restaurant five months ago, Angela's Cafe was a pizzeria. He'll remember you on your second visit.

Then there's the chef herself, Angela Atenco Lopez. Having cooked professionally in Puebla, a center of Mexican gastronomy and her home till five years ago, she now prepares the dishes of that region here (plus the likes of pancakes, steak bomb subs, and ziti).

Olympians help welcome return of Ski to the Clouds

After a nine-year run, Loon Mountain is out and Bretton Woods is in for the 2008-09 edition of New Hampshire's popular Threedom Pass. Waterville Valley and Cranmore Mountain will continue as anchor resorts in the multimountain discount plan. The change was spurred by the sale of Loon last year to Boyne USA. The pass ranges from $329 for kids up to $749 for an adult ticket with no blackout dates. Passes go on sale Monday, and those who purchase a pass in March or April get to use it for the remainder of the current ski season at no additional cost.

Globe correspondents Tony Chamberlain and T.D. Thornton contributed to this report.

An Odyssey to See Barack Obama

I pointed her to Real Clear Politics for great coverage of the important stories of the day, the latest polls, head-to-head matchups between Obama and McCain and Clinton and McCain, and more.

The time seemed to fly by because I was so enjoying talking to the numerous people around me. At 5 p.m., I asked the undecided student if he could get the Web on his cell phone. Yeah, why, he asked. Because Virginia's results are in, I said. The polls closed at 7pm. He looked up the news.

"They're saying Obama won Virginia." Quickly the word passed through the crowd snaking through our holding area. "Obama's won Virginia." No one was surprised, just excited.

At 6 p.m., the event volunteers told us we'd have to go through security. I had just been through security at the airport, and was surprised how much tighter the security was at Obama's event.
