DANGER LURKS IN TEEN DATING GAME

New York's teen dating scene is a harsh reality of abusive 11-year-olds, 15-year-old rapists, beatings with broomsticks, and girls forced into cocaine addiction at 16.

City officials and parents were shocked and appalled last week by findings in the city Health Department's Teen Safety Report.

The study gave a disturbing insight into New York's teenage dating violence, which has spiked by 40 percent since 1999.

One out of 10 girls at New York high schools have been forced into sex, with reported rapes increasing by 34 percent.

One in 10 New York teens have experienced physical violence at the hands of a partner, the study of 8,000 students from grades 9 to 12 found.

"In public schools, the violence is way more up-front," said 17-year-old Alex Unger, a senior from an uptown school.

Girl-group get-togethers to plan for 2008

Many women have a love-hate relationship with Sex and the City. It was a great show but it spawned so many horrible things: New York bus tours that stopped at, among other show-specific sites, the store where Charlotte bought her "Rabbit Pearl" vibrator; sassy single-girl dating columnists; and online quizzes to determine which character you are. So when the Sex and the City movie was announced, we wearily resigned ourselves to the onslaught of more articles on what the fab four were wearing; if the on-set photos of Carrie in a wedding dress were a real part of the plot or just a dream sequence; and on the cultural impact of the series we just can't seem to get away from. We'd love to say enough already, but who's kidding who? Come May 30, we'll be in line for the movie with everyone else.

College men's hockey: Michigan Tech scorer travels paths that few ...

You don't see many Division III hockey players move up to the WCHA. Fewer still lead their teams in scoring. Twice.

If that doesn't set Peter Rouleau apart, he's also the only player on the ice tonight at the National Hockey Center who also is married.

Just how he got where he is goes back to Hancock (Mich.) High School, just across the lift bridge from Houghton and Michigan Tech. As a freshman, he helped win a state title. A year later, he began dating the girl who nearly eight years later became his wife.

His playing career took a jolt, though, after he graduated in 2002 and spurned a scholarship offer from then-MTU head coach Mike Sertich.

"He offered me a full-ride and I made a mistake," said Rouleau, whose 25 points leads the Michigan Tech Huskies against the 16th-ranked St.

Violent woman-hater Levi Bellfield is main Milly Dowler murder suspect

The man convicted yesterday of murdering two women and trying to kill a third was left free to continue his campaign of violence against women because of basic investigative errors by police.

Levi Bellfield was found guilty at the Old Bailey of murdering Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22, and attempting to murder Kate Sheedy. He was then identified as the prime suspect for the unsolved murder of the schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

A Scotland Yard task force has been set up to investigate Bellfield’s possible connection to a series of 20 murders, attempted murders and other attacks dating back 25 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton said that Bellfield was a dangerous man and that women would be safer now that he was behind bars.

Reporters' Notebook: San Rafael teen has first baby of the year in ...

The first Marin baby of 2008 took an extra day to come into the world but bounced right into the arms of 17-year-old mother Kenia Ramos of San Rafael.

Kenia Damaris Ceron was born at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae. She tipped the scales at 9 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21-3/4 inches long, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Ramos, a sophomore at San Rafael High School, said she and the baby are doing fine. Ramos said she and her boyfriend Ivan Ceron have been dating for about a year and a half.

Marin has a low teen birth rate, according to statistics provided by the county's Department of Health and Human Services. Although the statewide rate of births among girls 15 to 19 years old was 37 per 1,000 live births in 2005, in Marin the rate was 12 per 1,000 live births.

Former Mormon missionary gets prison in Nevada child sex case

A former Mormon missionary was sentenced Thursday to two to six years in prison after a judge ruled he violated terms of a plea deal that called for him to complete counseling and community service.

The judge decreed John Misseldine, 26, guilty of lewdness with a child under the age of 14 and coercion, and ordered him to register and submit to monitoring as a sex offender. The felony charges, dating to 2003, had been stayed under terms of the October 2005 plea deal.

``I still maintain my innocence in this case,'' Misseldine said when Clark County District Judge Donald Mosley asked him to speak.

The judge dismissed Misseldine's assertions that the claims against him were false and a scheme by the girls' families to get money from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Two dead after Valentine's Day tiff

A Northern Territory man shot dead his partner and stuffed her body in a freezer on a rural property outside of Katherine, before turning the gun on himself.

Police found the bodies of the unemployed couple in the Helena Road area, 8km north-west of Katherine, about 4am (CST) on Valentine's Day morning.

They had been called to the property 12 hours earlier - and cordoned off the area and evacuated several houses - following reports of a disturbance involving a gun.

The couple, known in the neighbourhood for their recent relationship problems, were believed to have been aged in their 50s and had been dating for about two years, today's NT News reported.

A neighbour told the paper the dead man, known only as Wayne, and his girlfriend Jacqueline Morrison were drinking at the property on Wednesday when they got into a heated argument.

Special Assignment: Love and Livestock

Finding love is like looking for a needle in a haystack, and living miles away from anyone only makes it harder. "You don't see anybody out here other than the mail man," Maquoketa farmer John Mayland said. John's friends in Dyersville, who also have a side hobby of matchmaking, say he's the cream of the crop. "We will see young girls come in here and we're really focused on John lately. We ask if they're dating...We haven't got anybody else in line yet. We're still working on John," Christi Hess said. But the dating game is tough in small town eastern Iowa. "I have to go to the cities. It's 60 miles to go to Davenport, it's 20 or 30 miles to Dubuque. Otherwise, it's small town bars and you never know what you get in a bar. Nobody's looking for commitment. So, it's pretty slim pickings around here," John said.

'Penelope' doesn't fit

A movie is like a "some assembly required" toy you put together Christmas Eve: If you don't get section A assembled just so, sections B, C, D and E won't come together. That's basically the problem with "Penelope": Without taking the time to get its keystone first section right, director Mark Palansky's subsequent sections result in a toy that promises fun but ultimately disappoints. Here's the deal: the blueblood Wilhern family is plagued by a generations-old curse dating to when Ralph Wilhern proposed to a common servant girl, then rescinded the offer. Bad move: The girl's mom was the town witch, who proclaimed that the first daughter born to a Wilhern would have a pig face, a condition that could only be undone by the pig-faced one being found lovable by one of her own.Darned if it doesn't take a century and a half for a daughter -- a legitimate one -- to be born.

'Tweens' in sexual, abusive relationships

Sixth graders with boyfriends or girlfriends. Middle schoolers going on dates.

Not uncommon, says a new national survey released today.

Roughly half of 1,043 "tweens," aged 11 to 14, who participated in the study are now or have been in dating relationships, says the Tween and Teen Dating Violence and Abuse Survey conducted by the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) and Liz Claiborne Inc.

Perhaps more surprisingly, almost 30 percent of these young teens think oral sex and sexual intercourse are expected in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. And hundreds of tweens report that their dating partners have harassed them, bossed them around or tried to monopolize their time.

A few even report physical abuse, such as hitting, slapping or kicking, or being pressured into having oral sex or intercourse.

'Conman Bon Levi behind massage businesses' - ACCC

Meanwhile, the Department of Child Protection has banned a 16-year-old girl from working in the business after determining that she was put at risk. The DCP said that if she was found working at a Bikini Girls Massage parlour again her employers could face three years imprisonment. The Sunday Times revealed in January that Mr Levi was calling himself a "marketing consultant'' for the massage business which hires teenagers to rub down naked men for cash. Mr Levi has a criminal record dating back to 1963. He was behind get-rich-quick scams for decades, earning convictions for fraud, stealing, breaking and entering, assault and other offences. He was jailed in the US for 37 months after an FBI investigation into his role in a pyramid-style franchise scheme. In the Federal Court on Thursday, Judge Antony Siopis dismissed a motion by Mr Levi to halt contempt of court proceedings lodged against him by the ACCC in June last year.
