DANGER LURKS IN TEEN DATING GAME

New York's teen dating scene is a harsh reality of abusive 11-year-olds, 15-year-old rapists, beatings with broomsticks, and girls forced into cocaine addiction at 16.

City officials and parents were shocked and appalled last week by findings in the city Health Department's Teen Safety Report.

The study gave a disturbing insight into New York's teenage dating violence, which has spiked by 40 percent since 1999.

One out of 10 girls at New York high schools have been forced into sex, with reported rapes increasing by 34 percent.

One in 10 New York teens have experienced physical violence at the hands of a partner, the study of 8,000 students from grades 9 to 12 found.

"In public schools, the violence is way more up-front," said 17-year-old Alex Unger, a senior from an uptown school.

Paedophile murder-accused to stand trial

Stinson's battered body was found dumped in the driveway of a poultry farm in Wylie Road, Foxton, in July last year.

Bruce Tamatea, 46, and Aubrey Harrison, 27, and a Palmerston North solo mother, 32, who has name suppression, are jointly charged with his murder.

Today the three were remanded for trial in the High Court at Palmerston North on September 1.

Stinson, 57, had a history of sex offences against young girls dating back to 1967.

He had been due to appear in Palmerston North District Court on charges that went back several years - including the attempted rape of a girl under 12.

I.V. Humbles High School Lotharios

Last weekend, two of my good friends celebrated their 22nd birthdays. On Friday night, we strapped on our heels, went to a fancy downtown lounge and proceeded to drink until everyone was making out with strangers. Saturday night, my friend threw a "Seventh Grade Bar Mitzvah Birthday Bash," where the attendees dressed up in their middle school finest of butterfly clips and warm-up pants and, well… drank until everyone was making out with strangers.

As much as we like to pretend we're all grown up, let's lose the façade of sophistication and admit it: When it comes to dating, we may as well be back in middle school. The girls may not wear belly shirts anymore, and almost all of the boys have stopped frosting their tips, but in Isla Vista, the dating rituals are the same as they were in eighth grade.

Hayden Panettiere GQ Magazine's Obsession of the Year

"You can't schedule rehab for me. And I don't think you can schedule any DUIs," Panettiere told the magazine. "I think I'm going to be one of those boring girls."

For a boring girl, Panettiere is pretty racy, saying she doesn't mind rumors that she's interested in women and naming her favorite beautiful actresses.

"You want to make me a lesbian? That's totally fine with me," she said.

"We could do a love affair with Angelina [Jolie]. ... There are so many beautiful girls. Charlize Theron. Oh, my God. Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous. Jessica Alba."

The tabloid target also mocks rumors linking her to a string of boyfriends, including castmate Milo Ventimiglia and actor B.J. Novak from "The Office."

"Well, now that I'm single, it's like I'm dating every male I'm standing next to," she said.

'Conman Bon Levi behind massage businesses' - ACCC

Meanwhile, the Department of Child Protection has banned a 16-year-old girl from working in the business after determining that she was put at risk. The DCP said that if she was found working at a Bikini Girls Massage parlour again her employers could face three years imprisonment. The Sunday Times revealed in January that Mr Levi was calling himself a "marketing consultant'' for the massage business which hires teenagers to rub down naked men for cash. Mr Levi has a criminal record dating back to 1963. He was behind get-rich-quick scams for decades, earning convictions for fraud, stealing, breaking and entering, assault and other offences. He was jailed in the US for 37 months after an FBI investigation into his role in a pyramid-style franchise scheme. In the Federal Court on Thursday, Judge Antony Siopis dismissed a motion by Mr Levi to halt contempt of court proceedings lodged against him by the ACCC in June last year.

Rising from obscurity

Luther's senior boys basketball team receives the Lions' share of the publicity.

Much of the media exposure results from the prestigious Luther Invitational Tournament, which has a rich history dating back to 1953.

The Luther Lions' senior girls team excels in comparative obscurity -- except on nights such as Thursday. Luther capped an unbeaten Regina Intercollegiate Basketball League season last night by defeating the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 68-59 in the 4A girls city final.

Girl-group get-togethers to plan for 2008

Many women have a love-hate relationship with Sex and the City. It was a great show but it spawned so many horrible things: New York bus tours that stopped at, among other show-specific sites, the store where Charlotte bought her "Rabbit Pearl" vibrator; sassy single-girl dating columnists; and online quizzes to determine which character you are. So when the Sex and the City movie was announced, we wearily resigned ourselves to the onslaught of more articles on what the fab four were wearing; if the on-set photos of Carrie in a wedding dress were a real part of the plot or just a dream sequence; and on the cultural impact of the series we just can't seem to get away from. We'd love to say enough already, but who's kidding who? Come May 30, we'll be in line for the movie with everyone else.

Annual teen violence workshop focuses on dating this year

Educators say the teen workshop on teen violence at Greenville Tech on Saturday will not just give kids a method to sidestep gangs, but how to not get pulled into fights that result from dating.

Fights between two girls frequently occur if both teens want to date the same boy, said Andrew Jackson, a Spartanburg educator coordinating the session.

"Not only do we try to reduce violence, we want to give kinds other options," he said. An estimated 150 to 200 teens have traditionally attended. "This is for everybody in the Upstate, not just for Greenville," Jackson said.

The 13th annual Violence Prevention Workshop is set from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Techs Allied Health Building #120; the event is free and open to the public. Lunch is being provided. This workshop is designed for males and females, ages 8 through 17 years old.

Kicking over the ice cream bucket

I picked chocolate fudge, cookie dough and bits from crushed Heath Bars. My date had strawberries, vanilla cream and marshmallows. The smiling servers brandished ice cream scoops like scimitars. The flavors were mashed on a cold marble slab. Music from the Pixies bounced off walls covered in pale, yellow paint. It was my first date in college.

UW students and U-District residents have long regarded Mix Ice Cream Bar, known locally as “The Mix," as a neighborhood icon. It has humored freshman dating dramas, late night partygoers and sweet-toothed ice cream addicts looking for their banana split fix. I chose it for my date because I had read that girls like chocolate. I like ice cream. The Mix had both, plus a bathroom rife with potty humor and Day-Glo graffiti.

Minutes after ordering, our confections were ready.

Bluffton post office simply must do better

We all recognize the strain rapid growth in Bluffton has placed on the people and facilities, but when a box of undelivered mail sits underfoot for nearly two months before things are set right, something else is wrong.

The Bluffton Boys & Girls Club had to go searching for its mail last week after contributors asked about uncashed checks dating to December. Thirty-two thousand dollars lay among the more than 130 pieces of mail that did not make it into the club's post office box.

Instead, the mail sat in a bin in the office -- along with notices to come pick up extra mail.

Chanelle fumes at Best's model fans

Chanelle Hayes flew into a rage when three models started flirting with Calum Best while she was trying to talk to him, say reports. Hayes started throwing cushions around Chinawhites nightclub after Jamie Leigh, Gemma Hiles and Fiona Graham started chatting to Best, claims the Daily Star. A source said: "Chanelle was getting on very well with Calum until the trio of sexy girls moved in on him. "When it became obvious he was taking them home, she flipped and started hurling the silk cushions from her sofa in their direction." She also reportedly warned footballer Jermain Defoe's ex-girlfriend Charlotte Mears to leave her friend and fellow Big Brother star Danielle Lloyd alone. Lloyd is currently dating Defoe, and Mears blames the former Miss England for ending her relationship with the England striker.
