Readers Respond to Council-Marine Recruiters Controversy

The Planet is only printing letters from locals regarding the ruling on the Marine Recruitment Station. Some of these letters were sent prior to the Feb. 12 City Council meeting and thus do not reflect the council's most recent ruling. Signed letters from non-locals and letters addressed to third parties will be published on our website. Unsigned letters will not be published. RESCIND THE VOTE Editors, Daily Planet: I just read the Fox News report concerning the Marine Recruiters in Berkeley. Berkeley City Council, what where you thinking? I cannot believe the shame that you have brought upon the citizens of Berkeley with your recent vote to ostracize and disrespect the Marine Corps recruiters working in Berkeley. The personal feelings of the mayor and councilmembers should not enter into the business of running the city.

Newcomer's charm fuels 'Bartlett'

Here's a name to remember: Anton Yelchin.

OK, no one said it would be easy to remember. But make a mark of it: This kid's going to be around for a long time. He's got charisma, cool and cocky likability to spare.

In fact, it seems somehow fitting to find him on the verge of breaking out with "Charlie Bartlett," a movie that co-stars Robert Downey Jr., about whom the exact same things could have been said 20 years ago.

SNL touts balance in political sketches

Saturday Night Live's" Feb. 23 broadcast, its first of 2008, drew a 36 percent bigger crowd than its season-to-date average, according to Media Life Magazine. And Sen. Hillary Clinton, or more likely one of her advisers, were among those taking notes. That broadcast featured a CNN debate in which deferential reporters tripped over themselves to accomodate Sen. Barack Obama's every need.

Does this mean the show's political clout is on the rise...again?

Time will tell, but Mr. Michaels promises politics will play an "enormous" role in the rest of the "SNL" season. He adds the show may produce separate political specials in the fall during the final lap of the presidential race.

And who knows which politician might turn up in a sketch next.

What Happened To New York: A History Of The 00's So Far

The firings come six weeks after the arrival of The Post's new editor, Col Allan.A judge appoints a lawyer for Giuliani's children in his "rancorous" divorce. New York State and City forced to reimburse 20,000 families who were cut from Medicaid in 1997 by "errors." Rupert Murdoch granted another FCC exemption to own both newspapers and TV stations in New York market. Laid-off dotcommers have parties where people are sorted by armband; "laid-off workers wear glowing pink armbands, recruiters wear green armbands and all others wear blue armbands."

August 31, 2001: "The booming late 1990's appear to have left the middle class in the New York region and California no better off than it was a decade before, an analysis of Census Bureau data suggests. The poor got a little poorer, the rich got a lot richer and the large group in the middle emerged slightly worse off than when the decade began."

September 4, 2001: A huge slump seen in high-end restaurant business.

Mardi Gras Prompts 2-Day Vote in Ala.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Don't mess with Mardi Gras in Alabama.

Voters in two coastal counties _ Baldwin and Mobile _ will vote Wednesday even though the state primary is six days later on Feb. 5. The reason: Feb. 5 also is Fat Tuesday when throngs of people celebrate Mardi Gras on the Gulf Coast. The frenzied end to Carnival is an official holiday in the two counties in Alabama.

When the state legislature moved up the presidential primary from June 3 to Super Tuesday, it discovered belatedly that it fell on Mardi Gras. In Baldwin and Mobile counties, government shuts down and crowds by the tens of thousands jam the port city's streets for parades.

The legislature's solution was to let voters in those two counties go to the precincts six days early.

10 LOUGHTON: Town council signs recreation ground lease

LOUGHTON Town Council has formally taken control of Roding Valley recreation ground ending a saga stretching back over a decade.

A contract granting the council a 125-year lease was finally signed bringing to an end a string of negotiations with Epping Forest District Council dating back to the town council's creation in 1996.

The agreement came as the council was due to debate a motion drafted by councillor Chris Pond threatening to withdraw all maintenance payments for the ground in protest at the district council's string of delays over the lease.

The slow road to perfection

They are extras in a drama with a plot as bold as any Hollywood movie: a quest to create a car that doesn't wreck the planet but saves it.

Sound preposterous? It's the goal of Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe, who for the past two years has been piling pressure on his engineers to devise a 'dream car' that leaves the air as clean as it found it, avoids crashes and improves the health of those who drive it.

Among today's car manufacturers, only Toyota would dare to air such an ambition in public - and have it taken remotely seriously. As the Economist put it, 'There's the world car industry, and then there's Toyota.' This year the Japanese phenomenon is on course to churn out 9 million vehicles from assembly lines in 28 countries, in the process probably overtaking GM as the world's largest car-maker.

ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL

But just as you need skills to drive a car, you need skills to participate in a democracy.

It's wonderful that people have the right to vote, but we have to create a system that allows them to develop the skills to see why they're voting, who they're voting for and why they prefer that candidate's positions.

On this issue, we here in Egypt still have lots of hard work to do.

So how do you do it? How do you create a culture of civic rights and responsibilities? Education. We have to start early in the schools. We have to make people realize that they're not just beneficiaries of services, they're partners in their communities. You have a problem with the water in your community? Fine. Don't just scream, ‘We have no water!' No, be a leader. Get your friends and neighbors together and form a delegation to go to the authorities to present your problem and ask whether there's anything you can do to help make it better.

Something to Take to Heart

Tonight, after practice, I saw this little blonde headed boy that I see around town constantly. You wanna know where I see him everytime? On the basketball court. The kid, being about as mature as you can be at his age. He is probably a 2nd grader, and he walks around town as if he was 15. Something is noticable though everytime I see him. First of all, I have yet to ever see his parents. Secondly, he doesen't seem to be the most lucky kid when it comes to who has the money and who doesen't. Living in a poor family as a kid, I know how that can be. But, everytime I see him around the court, he doesen't normally say a word to me but he will give me a little head nod. Of course, I will give one back and he will continue to watch me on the court. However, he once told me that I am his favorite basketball player and that really felt great to me.
