| TV Docs offer entertaining treatment to benefit writers
Oh, who spent some time in January on the picket line to show solidarity for the "Grey's" staff, said she noticed the strikers were getting "really nervous" as the work stoppage wore on. "I heard things like, 'I have enough saved to get by for one more month,' " she recalled. "There was this underlying worry. People were starting to think it could go on for months and months." Oh used her time off to simply "recharge" after "a hectic four seasons." She added, "Now that everybody's recharged, we're going to get some really good stuff on the show this year. We have well-rested writers with a burst of creativity. I think we're all excited to see what's going to happen." Fred Shuster (818) 713-3676 fred.shuster@dailynews.com .
In Newsweek, Bush Aide Says GOP Suffers from 'Bolshevik Fervor'
If were picking which conservative could represent us in Newsweek, conservatives would now find it hard to say "I guess I could live with Michael Gerson." These same Republican voters that are now being muddied with comparison to the Bolsheviks for their obsession with "purity" voted easily for Gerson's man George W. Bush in the last two elections, despite his lack of such purity. At the very least, Gerson might have the manners not to dismiss the voters who gave him his cozy place of profit and prominence as a bunch of bloody-minded Soviet commissars. Surely, liberal Newsweek editor Jon Meacham loved every word of this piece, especially the claim that major GOP donors are thinking of going Obama. You could easily argue that voters who prize ideological perfection to other qualities that might make a Republican candidate electable – charm, rhetorical fluency, an ability to build trust – could be making a mistake.
DSGMC, ex-chief in dock for honouring Tytler
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and its former president Prahalad Singh Chandok are in the dock for honouring Congress leader Jagdish Tytler who was alleged to be involved in anti-Sikh riots of 1984. And the continuation of Giani Surinder Singh, who backtracked from his statements against the same Congress leader in the court as head granthi of Gurdwara Singh Sabha has added fuel to the fire. H.S. Phoolka, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court and author of the book When A Tree Shook Delhi - 1984 Carnage And Its Aftermath, made these sensational revelations here recently. When contacted, DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said the committee was issuing dismissal notice to Surinder Singh on the basis of reports given in the book. He said a show-cause notice was also being served on Chandok as to why he had honoured Tytler, thereby hurting the Sikh sentiments.

UK 2017: under surveillance
IT is a chilling, dystopian account of what Britain will look like 10 years from now: a world in which Fortress Britain uses fleets of tiny spy-planes to watch its citizens, of Minority Report-style pre-emptive justice, of an underclass trapped in sink-estate ghettos under constant state surveillance, of worker drones forced to take on the lifestyle and values of the mega-corporation they work for, and of the super-rich hiding out in gated communities constantly monitored by cameras and private security guards. This Orwellian vision of the future was compiled on the orders of the UK's information commissioner - the independent watchdog meant to guard against government and private companies invading the privacy of British citizens and exploiting the masses of information currently held on each and every one of us - by the Surveillance Studies Network, a group of academics.
Search Marketers' Wish Lists, Part 2
If you want to share your own wish list, or discuss any of the ones shared here, feel free to join the conversation in the SEW Forums. Q: What's at the top of your wish list from the search engines this year? What are the most egregious problems they need to address? What would be the most helpful product/feature/service they could offer to help you? Jody Nimetz, senior organic marketing strategist at Enquiro Search Solutions The item at the top of my wish list from the search engines this year is a keyword analysis tool that provides some sort of accurate search volume. While Google has said that they will never give out this information, Microsoft has a pretty cool tool with their KSP tool that just might do the trick. An accurate search volume/keyword analysis tool would truly be the most helpful service that they could provide.
Retirement Savings a Key Concern for Americans, AICPA Survey of CPA ...
In responding to an open-ended question, nine out of 10 CPAs surveyed said their individual clients were concerned about retirement. Costs associated with health care and education were ranked by respondents as the second (59 percent) and third (47 percent) financial concerns of clients. "Many Baby Boomers are discovering their retirement kitty is not as big as it needs to be to fund a comfortable retirement and that they are going to have to work longer than they had intended," said James Metzler, AICPA vice president. The results of the poll were released today at the AICPA's 2008 Advanced Personal Financial Planning Technical Conference in Las Vegas. Respondents included CPAs who hold the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential, which the AICPA offers exclusively to CPAs who are committed to financial planning as a practice discipline and have demonstrated expertise in a number of areas of financial planning.
Ask the Lawyer: Trademark disputes and stopping spammers
Lawyers Simon Briskman, Sarah Wright and Lise-Anne Dunn from London-based firm Olswang answer your questions on trademark infringement in search meta tags and how to deal with a spammer who's stealing the name of a small business. If you have questions related to IT or business for the laywers, email editorial@silicon.com. Q: 'BIW' is a registered trademark of BIW Technologies Ltd, certificate number 001769926, registered in all countries of European Community. One of our UK competitors is using 'BIW' as a keyword to prompt the appearance of its 'sponsored link' (i.e. an advert) on Google Adwords. When we objected, the competitor claimed it is not breaching the trademark as it is not using BIW in its advert and cites an American court case involving an insurance company Geico (though I cannot see how a US case is necessarily relevant to the UK/EC situation).
Stepchildren use parents' house as party central
Dear Abby: I married a man with two adult children. When I met him, "Jerry" was a single father whose ex-wife had died soon after their divorce. I have two small children who live with us. Jerry has been a wonderful husband and stepfather. When we married years ago, we both owned our own homes. We jointly decided to rent mine and live in his. Whenever we go away on a vacation, his children use our home without asking. There have been parties, complaints from neighbors, our house left in disarray, and "friends" I don't know sleeping in my children's beds. In the past, Jerry tolerated this behavior. .
