| Costello brushes aside Reserve warning
TREASURER Peter Costello has defended the coalition's election spending following commentary that it could over stimulate Australia's economy. Mr Costello again defended Prime Minister John Howard's announcement last Monday of more than $9 billion in new spending, just hours after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) issued a warning about inflation. The RBA warned that stimulating the economy could cause inflation and lead to further interest rate rises. Mr Costello said the coalition's $34 billion tax cuts plan would get more people into the workforce. "Our modelling showed 65,000 new people would come into the workforce and build the capacity of the Australian economy," he told Channel 7. "With unemployment now heading down to four per cent, what we actually need in Australia is, we need more people in the workforce and having a competitive tax system is a good way of getting more people into the workforce." Opposition treasury spokesman Wayne Swan said the coalition was spending $6 billion more than Labor.

Animals Seized in Dog Fighting Raid Ready To Adopt
Some of the dozens of animals seized in the bloodsport bust earlier this week are now ready for adoption. The Humane Society has geese, goats, and chickens looking for new homes. They were seized from property in Avra Valley Tuesday, along with 110 pit bulls. Investigators think the operators of the West Orange Grove kennel bred and trained the dogs for fighting, then shipped them out across the country. Another 40 pit bulls were seized from two other locations Tuesday. None of the dogs is up for adoption while they're part of the criminal investigation. Six people face charges. They were released on their own recognizance after making initial court appearances Tuesday night. .
Natalie Portman - more than a woman
Society's attitude to powerful women has scarcely changed in the 472 years since Anne Boleyn was beheaded at the Tower of London, concludes the actress Natalie Portman, who portrays Henry VIII's unfortunate second wife in The Other Boleyn Girl. "You do see how people were calling her [Anne] a witch for having power, and people do that still," argues Portman. "I mean, we still demonise women in power and we still make them targets of ridicule. It's so easy to call them names and criticise them for having power, for making changes, for being strong. Like Hillary Clinton, who I think is so very smart. It's interesting to me that that taboo is still in place," she says. In recent years, the focus of public criticism has switched to female celebrities.
A painful past sparks concern about Obama's safety
I must admit, fears of a repeat of those shameful, cowardly acts gripped me early on, and I too wished Obama would not run to spare his family, my heart, and our nation more dark days. Surely, this would be too much to bear. Now, I believe his determination to fulfill his destiny, regardless of the demented folks who would stop at nothing to destroy him, is bringing about the HEALING that we all desperately need. Every time I watch him go further and further to realize his dreams, it rekindles the depth of pride and hope I had in my heart for this country inspired by President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. NO MATTER WHETHER HE WINS OR LOSES, HE DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXERCISE HIS FREEDOM in what is suppose to be the land of the 'free and the brave.' In doing so, it just may restore this nation's spirit so badly broken by an ignorant few.
AFL Week 1 Preview and Predictions (Pt. 2)
A quick note before we get into the preview and predictions. Mentioned in the part 1 column was the release of former Orlando Predator WR Javarus Dudley. This came as a surprise to most but to the New Orleans VooDoo, it came as a gift wrapped in gold. The team from the Big Easy snatched up the wideout on Thursday and could look to use his services as early as this weekend. ARIZONA RATTLERS (4-12) at UTAH BLAZE (8-8) Saturday, March 1 - 9:00 (ET) The Rattlers - Arizona completely rehauled the entire roster during the offseason. The face of the franchise for 15 years, QB Sherdrick Bonner (now with Chicago), was shown the door after a new coaching staff showed up in the desert. Head coach Kevin Guy was brought over from Western Division rival San Jose SaberCats where he constructed one of the best defenses in the league last year.

Lynch mob hacks Kenyan policeman to death
A 3,000-strong mob armed with bows and arrows, spears, clubs and machetes has murdered a police officer in the violence-hit Rift Valley region of western Kenya. The lynching took place near Ainamoi, after the officer was accused of wounding a civilian when police fired on protesters yesterday. Peter Aliwa, a police commander, said it was the first reported killing of a policeman in the violence that has raged in Kenya since disputed elections a month ago. "The police officer injured three attackers before he was overpowered and lynched on the spot," he said. The police have shot scores of people in riots and protests accross Kenya since Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, accused President Kibaki of rigging his re-election on December 27. .
Australian turtles smuggled into the US
AN American pet shop owner has pleaded guilty to smuggling endangered turtles from Australia and Asia to the US where they can fetch high prices. San Francisco man Coleman Lau, 29 had 14 baby Fly River turtles inside his clothes when he flew from Hong Kong to San Francisco in March 2004, the Associated Press reported. Fly River turtles are protected in their native countries and under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The amphibians, which cost up to $US500 ($566) at pet shops, are native to fresh water in Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The smuggled turtles were handed over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service, which found homes for them at a research centre and in California zoos and aquariums, the AP said.
Rabbis get serious about matching up singles
The rise of interfaith marriage is a sensitive issue among American Jews, and now two powerful forces in the religion are teaming up to do something about it: rabbis and JDate, the top matchmaking Web site for Jewish singles. For the first time in its 10-year history, the site is offering a bulk rate to rabbis who want to buy membership accounts for congregants. According to Gail Laguna, JDate's vice president of communications, singles who sign up through their congregation get a slight discount on the site's $149 six-month subscription fee. "This is a way for us to break down the walls of the synagogue," said Rabbi Michael Cahana, of Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Ore. The rabbis who negotiated the rate are also picking up the tab. Rabbi Donald Weber of Temple Rodeph Torah in Marlboro, N.J., has paid out of his own pocket for 24 six-month subscriptions.
