While most classes culminate with a treacherous final exam, the 10 students of Stan Armstrong's class concluded with an epic two-day battle at Ranch State Park. The Afro-American studies and educational outreach instructor, who is also a local Civil War documentary filmmaker, taught UNLV's first Civil War re-enactment class this fall, infusing his background into his teaching while giving his students a unique perspective of history. “You can always learn more," Armstrong said. “The thing about our American history is you should know both sides." His class joined 200 to 300 other re-enactors, gaining the chance to dawn Civil War uniforms as privates, assistant surgeons and messengers. “They had a chance to be a part of a real life battle and see what life was like 150 years ago," Armstrong said.

Fed Cuts Interest Rates by a Half-Point
The Fed has been moving very aggressively lately — making an unprecedented three-quarters of a point cut on Jan. 22, followed by a half-percentage point cut Wednesday. It's a measure of how serious Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is about problems in the credit market and the threat of a recession. The Fed's main policy-setting interest rate has been pushed down to 3 percent. Whether additional cuts follow depends on what happens in the broad economy, and, to a lesser extent, on the financial markets. In its statement Wednesday, the Fed left the door open to additional rate cuts by noting that despite everything it has done recently, "downside risks to growth remain." The Fed will be looking closely for signs of deterioration in the job market. If the economy starts to shed jobs rather than generate new ones, the Fed may be cutting rates for the foreseeable future.
SNP criticises Alexander’s month of ‘self-imposed silence’
It is ridiculous that the leader of Scotland's opposition has maintained her vow of silence for nearly a month. What kind of leadership or opposition is that? Silence is golden but Scotland deserves better from the leader of the opposition." The Herald broke the story on November 29 about the donation of just under £1000 from Jersey-based businessman Paul Green to Ms Alexander's leadership campaign coffers. As he cannot register to vote in UK elections he is barred from making political donations, but Ms Alexander's campaign team went ahead and solicited the money. Cathcart MSP Charlie Gordon paid for that with his place in Labour's shadow cabinet. Ms Alexander insisted that she had e-mails which cleared her of any involvement in the illegal donation, although she sent a handwritten note to Jersey thanking Mr Green.

Knox mayor's aide questions recording of receipts in audit
Isn't it interesting that the picture accompanying this article showing "a sample of receipts related to the Knox County audit," contains receipts from February 2008? The audit was from 2002 - 2007. Is it really necessary to create bogus pictures to go with this article? .

The Last Word: Sean Paul Causes a Seizure, Akon Plays R. Kelly, and ...
What's cookin' everyone. The weekend is upon us and the news keeps coming. This week proved to be another lively one with Roy Jones getting the W over Felix Trinidad, Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama taking shots at each other as South Carolinians prepare to vote in the Democratic primary, Fred Thompson deading his chances of becoming president by dropping out of the race for the Republican party nomination and a study that counted 935 false statements made by President Bush and top administration officials to justify going to war with Iraq two years after the 2001 terrorists attacks. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of actor Heath Ledger, who was found dead Tuesday (Jan. 22) of what many think to be an apparent suicide or accidental drug overdose. Shout out to the sounding boards for staying hot with the feedback, despite all the cold weather sweeping the country.

Ryder Cup Battle
The final round stats evoke memories of the last Ryder Cup. At Brookline, the Americans were outplayed over the first couple of days but when the heat was really turned up they produced the goods when it mattered most. And so at Lytham on Sunday, the US side provided the winner in David Duval, outscored the Europeans heavily and holed the putts when it really mattered. The most notable difference came in the scoring. The Europeans had been a shot better on average for the first two days and half a stroke superior on Saturday. But today, the US side thrashed the Europeans by an average of over two shots! The figures were slightly distorted by Pierre Fulke's woeful 83 but significantly no European broke 70.
Hillary's Mutnemom!
Maguire makes one good point about b)--the big, initial Plame story, for which Rove was accused of being the source, was Robert Novak's, not Cooper's. Cooper's ran only online--it wasn't even in the printed Time, and it could easily have been overlooked in the fuss over Novak. But that leaves a), c), d), e), f) and g)! I say Rove's story is still implausible, though not beyond a reasonable doubt (unless Fitzgerald has other evidence). The other big pro-Rove factor: Rove hadn't talked to Cooper before, and Cooper wasn't a widely-feared Washington knife-fighter like Robert Novak, with whom any conversation was inherently fraught with peril and therefore memorable. ... P.S.: The Wall Street Journal explains that Viveca Novak's testimony (she tipped off Rove's attorney that Rove might have talked to Cooper, and the attorney "looked surprised") may bolster Mr.
