Nakamura lights up mundane victory

Maybe it is easy to conjure up a glorious 20-yard curling finish when your team is 2-0 up against beaten, heavy-legged opponents destined to slip out of Scotland's second tier. Maybe, though, unless you possess a special talent, it is never particularly easy to wheel round, wrap your left foot round a ball and then send it into the top corner of a net as if it had been drawn there."That was good," Strachan said of the goal. "It was good to see him back even if you could see he was rusty. But we had to play him because there are a lot of games coming up; more important games." The Celtic manager declared the Stirling win a "job well done", while admitting "it was never going to be a classic; it could only be an upset".Nakamura's strike brightened an afternoon that Stirling, in admirable fashion, made a dour struggle until Scot McDonald fired in a cut-back from Lee Naylor four minutes before the Japanese man's 71st-minute strike.

COLUMN:Poet celebrates black pride, promotes racial equality

American poet Langston Hughes is one of those figures.

Born Feb. 1, 1902, in Joplin, Mo., Hughes father abandoned his family when Hughes was only a boy. Much of his early childhood consisted of hopping around the Midwest while his mother and stepfather searched for employment. During this time, he was introduced to the blues and spirituals, both of which he would later integrate into his poetry.

Hughes studied engineering at Columbia University, but soon dropped out to pursue a writing career. His real education came from travels through Europe, Central America and Africa, after which he moved to Harlem to immerse himself in the black culture there. He became a leader of the artistic and literary movement known as the Harlem Renaissance.

One of his best-known poems was first published in 1921, when Hughes was only 19, called The Negro Speaks of Rivers.

Online colonel seemed like a catch

Wendy McKay thought she had met someone special when the Marine colonel deployed to Iraq started chatting with her on the online dating Web site.

Someone claiming to be Col. Richard Bartch told her he was in Iraq for the first time after volunteering for duty. And like her, he was divorced. Chats quickly led to e-mails and within a day he sent her photos of himself in uniform.

In one, he stood in his woodland digital-patterned utilities, proudly holding up his Bronze Star citation and medal. In another, he's lounging in desert cammies in a chair, with his service pistol holster pulled taut across his broad shoulders just next to his name tape.

His e-mails were romantic, echoing the sentiment of a schmaltzy Hallmark greeting card: "I went to sleep last night with a smile because I knew I'd be dreaming of you ...

Going Residential

Rooms are apartment-style suites with four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full eat-in kitchen and hardwood floors.

Cindy Allen, Jackson’s director of community relations, said that when Daniel J. Phelan, the college’s president, first proposed building on-campus housing, there was skepticism within the college and the local community. "People were saying, ‘This is not what community college is about,’ " Allen said. "But we did two surveys ... and found that it was exactly what would bring traditional-age students here."

The college started small, beginning with the $6.8 million, 24-suite building that opens this year. Just the first of three residential buildings planned on the campus, Allen said that Phelan "will probably go to the trustees in a month or two to say, ‘We’ve filled this dorm, let’s get started on building another.’ " One survey found that about 700 students wanted to live on campus; a more conservative study estimated 400 students.

In the first, she asked for advice on what to do with footage she had compiled on a visit to the Darfur region. Included was a photo album with handwritten annotations. "I used each photograph to convey the enormity of the situation and the staggering statistics," she says. "And I thought the faces that I showed him spoke so eloquently." That communication also contained information about China's role in the crisis, she adds.

Farrow got no response. Then she read that Spielberg was going to be an artistic director of the games. "I wrote him a letter of conscience saying I hoped he knew all these things," she says. "I really suggested he think twice. And then when I didn't hear back, I had a vision of a box within a box within a box—that he has an office, and then there's a real office behind that and maybe a really real office after that and maybe three letters a month actually get to him.
