Baseball Plays Waiting Game With Uniform Start Date

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -It was sunny and 78 in South Florida on Friday. The Miami baseball players were doing the same thing as their brethren at Nebraska, where it was in the 20s with patches of snow in the outfield of Lincoln's Haymarket Park.

Practice is all they can do. No one is allowed to play games until next Friday.

The new NCAA uniform starting date for Division I baseball was established with the intent to create competitive balance among northern and southern teams.

Miami coach Jim Morris says the rule might be seen as an equalizer, but it unfairly punishes teams in the South.

"We're taking the level of baseball down nationally," Morris said. "We're not bringing it up."

In past years the Hurricanes would have played a half dozen games at this point in February.

Elizabeth Hardwick: Writer, co-founder of 'The New York Review of ...

As she recounts in her one truly successful novel, Sleepless Nights (1979), her life in Manhattan was composed of "love and alcohol and clothes on the floor".

She shared an apartment in the Hotel Schuyler on West 45th Street with a gay friend from Kentucky and cast off the strict Protestantism in which she had been raised in favour of a bohemian existence of uncomplicated love affairs and visits to the many night-clubs where jazz was regularly performed. The pages devoted to Billie Holiday in Sleepless Nights are among the most starkly beautiful she ever wrote. She talks of Billie's "luminous self-destruction", her "glittering, sombre and solitary" presence, of her "creamy lips, oily eyelids, violent perfume":

Somehow she had retrieved from darkness the miracle of pure style.

Obama laments negativity

A Clinton surrogate raised Obama's Muslim heritage roots in what some viewed as an unflattering way. And he and Clinton have engaged in debate about their health care plans. "So far, I think, attempts to go negative in a way that's not policy-based have backfired on the people who have gone in that direction," Obama said during a brief interview with The Associated Press after a town hall-style meeting at an American Legion hall."If people are arguing about policy, that's part of politics and that's fair," said Obama, an Illinois senator. Obama said campaign ads focused on policy, such as his spot criticizing Clinton's universal health care plan, are fair game and he will be aggressive about making such comparisons. While not pleasant, he said he can't fault his rivals for them."I would distinguish between ads that I would say maybe mischaracterize my positions but had to do with policy, versus personal attacks or attempts to go at my character or those things.

Obama and Clinton vie for blue-collar voters in Ohio

The U.S. does not need the Clintions back in the White House. They were there for 8 years and have done well and made some bad decision which lost thousands of jobs. It is time for Obama who has made some tough decision but, they were the right decision not for himself but for us the American People. McCain I feel wants to be President for himself , not for America. We need a good change. Vote for Obama.

Fools rush in to virus writers' love trap

Star-crossed lovers have been warned not to lose their heads as well as their hearts on Valentine's Day as virus writers seek to exploit romantics.

While couples around the world engage in what is to some, a celebration of love and to others, a nauseating display of smugness, internet users have been cautioned about opening up e-mails from suspected secret admirers.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned earlier this week that people should be careful not to open up Valentine's Day-related e-cards in case they contain the 'Storm Worm', which it said has been designed to capitalise on the holiday by sending millions of e-mails advertising an e-card link within the text of the message to individuals.

The e-mail directs the recipient to click on a link to retrieve the e-card.

SNP government budget passed

The SNP's budget was tonight passed after it won the backing of MSPs at Holyrood.

The nationalist administration's first budget was voted through by 64 votes to one against with 60 abstentions after the Nationalists won the support of the Tories and independent Margo MacDonald.

The result removes the prospect of a snap election with First Minister Alex Salmond having previously threatened to quit and go to the country if it was not passed.

At least when I was skint, Caroline Flint wasn't around to shatter my ...

Like many a hack, every so often I get a missive from a bright young thing asking for advice on how to become, well, me.

All very flattering until the questions start - best journalism course to take; college to attend; career path to weave. At which point, the whole thing becomes disconcerting on several different levels: first, these clever, ambitious charmers are clearly after my job (Anne Baxter in All About Eve, via email).

Second, and most crucially, I have no gems of wisdom to impart about journalism courses, internships and the rest, because I never got to do any of that. Indeed, my overriding thought as I hamfistedly attempt to reply ('Avoid everything I did') is a slightly sad one. How would the person I used to be (young, up for it, but also penniless, clueless, without a middle-class safety net) get on in 2008? In these changing times, what are the breaks for people like me?

The answer is, one suspects, not many.

Liberty and private equity face-off, again

Liberty Global and the private equity firms Warburg Pincus and Cinven are battling it out to win the E3bn auction for Essent Kabelcom, the NetherlandsÂ’ second largest cable operator. Liberty had apparently been given preferred bidder status, but Warburg Pincus and Cinven are still vying to jointly take control.

A couple of weeks ago Warburg Pincus and Cinven jointly acquired Casema, the NetherlandsÂ’ third largest cable group, for E4.1bn including debt.
