In February 2008, Prime Minister Sundaravej publicly stated that "When the crackdown [on drugs] is underway, killings will take place ? extrajudicial killings do occur." This statement not only recalls the Thaksin government's 'license to kill'-style of drugs enforcement, when black lists and monthly targets were used as official policies for cutting the number of drug dealers, it is also an indication that the Prime Minister is preparing Thai citizens for a new wave of unlawful killings. It appears a cynical attempt to preempt both domestic and international criticism. It also represents a disturbing acceptance of unlawful behavior and excessive use of force by state authorities and a lack of political will to prevent further illegal killings. "The Prime Minister is now preparing another war on drugs, adding insult to injury to a situation in which crimes against humanity may have occurred," stated Baber.

Police Warn of Rapes After Online Sex Postings
After a rash of rapes in the Temple Hills and Suitland areas, police are warning women to be careful on online singles sites and online communities. At least six rapes have been reported in the last few months in those areas, some after women posted ads on Craigslist looking for sex. In the most recent sexual assault on February 19th, police say they responded to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue for reports of a rape in Suitland. The victim said she met the suspect on a chat line and agreed to meet with him. When the victim met the suspect, he showed a handgun and raped her in the building stairwell. Major Dan Dusseau, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division, said, "We want to alert women who are soliciting for sex online to use caution.
Software Mac OS X Hits Record Marketshare, Continues to Chip at ...
Linux also showed modest gains, up from 0.63% to 0.67% between December 2007 and January 2008. Part of this may be due to the popularity of cheap Linux driven PCs, such as the Eee PC and the Everex CloudBook which is available online from Wal-Mart (although Eee PC will soon be available with a stripped-down version of Windows XP). For the study, Net Applications used metrics collected from 40,000 partner websites to yield a large sample group and a relatively accurate picture of the current OS market. Windows still remains a strong leader in the OS market, but Linux providers and Apple can both take a measure of pride in that they're slowly chipping away a bit at the foundation of Microsoft's success. Of course that all could change with the next operating system, particularly if it's better received than Windows Vista.

Hoping to cash in on the demand, some brokers flooded online resale sites with ads selling tickets for several times their face value. Floor tickets initially sold for $150 to $200 but as of late last week, resellers were asking for as much as $550 on sites such as EBay and Craigslist. Several fans seemed more than willing to entertain the steep prices, with one person offering up to $800 for a pair in choice sections of the arena. Others have tried appealing to the sympathies of resellers. "Please ... I am a huge fan and slept outside a Ticketmaster location in Grade 6 just to get tickets and didnt (sic) get them then," one hopeful fan wrote on Craigslist. "Its (sic) 10 years later and I really want to have the opportunity to see them." Not surprisingly, the bulk of the interest has come from young women, with reseller Todd Dutlantis saying most of his ticket requests are from people between the ages of 19 and 28.
Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .

Steve Harvey Offers Hope For Black Radio
As black history month comes to a close, it is worth drawing attention to bright spots in black culture. One is comedian Steve Harvey's morning radio show. Harvey brings challenging commentary on aspects of black life using critical humor. Together with other solid black radio programs, Harvey's show renews hope that African-Americans will successfully address the moral and socio-economic ills troubling their communities. Unlike many black radio personalities, Harvey is not afraid to call out ignorance. The morning show caught my attention several months ago when Harvey made a public declaration that he would never play misogynistic music that degrades black women. This type of direct, on-air leadership will help put a dent in a genre of music that is rending the social fabric of our society.
